WAHLAP & FIDO

Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound paired up with FIDO, (Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside) to help some of the neediest but most deserving animals in our community iby hosting "Habitat for Dogmanity". This new event was held at the Indianapolis Animal Care and Control (IACC) and volunteeers spent the day building dog houses and working on the grounds of  IACC. Channel 8 WISH TV aired a news story about the event during the 11 pm news. Watch it here...

FIDO (www.fidoindy.org) is committed to helping dogs who have a home, but for various reasons, have to live their lives outside, frequently on a chain.  FIDO provides all kinds of support, including food, access to preventive medical care, fencing and shelter in some of the poorest areas of Indianapolis.

One of the greatest needs of FIDO is a ready supply of sturdy doghouses. Through donations of a local Habitat for Humanity, we have secured enough wood to build doghouses for them. Watch the video of Darcie Kurtz, founder and president of FIDO, talk about how they will be using the new doghouses.

Indianapolis Animal Care & Control (IACC) is responsible for housing the majority of the homeless animals in Marion County.  On a given day, they house close 500 animals. The grounds surrounding the shelter are fairly spacious and there are kennels for exercising the dogs.  It is impossible for the staff at IACC to maintain or landscape these areas, however and we’d like to spend some time removing weeds and adding new mulch to the kennel areas.  We’d also like to plant some flowers and spring bulbs.

How you can help*:
  • Build a dog house; bring your family or some friends to the next event!
  • Donate supplies or give a financial contribution for additional doghouses.
  • Donate snacks and drinks for the volunteer workers.
